“I feel bad for you son” is a recognisable and reverberating Shawn Carter sample that shudders in more than half-way through this lovely slice of instrumental hip-hop, in fact it feels immediately like a superfluous element to something that is so intrinsically beautiful. It’s a song that conjures not only the warmest, most exciting and happiest feelings, but a certain yearning for them too, an ingrained nostalgia that is hard to shake-off. Sufjan Stevens then, to provide an easy point of comparison, but with beats. Yet, the track’s greatest moment is when the feeling that Jay is talking right next to me and giving me counsel finally hits, that sample is instantly validated. It’s giving me goosebumps.
