Tune-yards (stylized tUnE-yArDs), is Merrill Garbuss from New England. This is DIY funky folk, as if M.I.A met White Denim at a Born Ruffians gig. Apparently by using a digital voice recorder and various shareware mixing software, she creates this amalgamation of pop that’s hard to put a finger on. Garbuss’s incredibly strong voice, matching that of any soul singer, belts notes out without a falter in her voice. The vocals are actually what give her music such character, leading her solo ensemble to create colourful, textured music.

Listening to “Bizness”, off of her recently released album, whokill, its hard to argue with its super upbeat feel. Like having a carnival coming out of your sound system, its pretty infectious. The trickling vocal piano that starts the track off is a prime example of what is to come from tune-yards. “Bizness” ends with the same pattern, except instead with something a bit louder, a wonderful climax.

You don’t have to just listen for yourself, watch it. Here’s a pretty radical video she did for Yours Truly, performing “You Yes You“, and the live sound is like another being, it builds off the tracks, making something quite quite lovely.
