ALBUM/MIXTAPE REVIEW: Das Racist – Sit Down, Man

I’m not going to lie, there isn’t much that excites me about music right now. Maybe its the lack of funds, maybe I’m going deaf, but I have found myself listening to old favorites rather than new bangers.
But Das Racist? Day’m. You wouldn’t think that the same guys who’s fame came from “Combination Pizza hut and Tacobell”, would slap the faces of music with what is probably some of the most interesting and exciting hip hop I’ve heard in awhile.
“Sit Down, Man” is a mixtape apparently, but its pretty much an album, its got the production, the structure, and most of all, its fucking awesome. The defining factor that makes this a mixtape, is the insane amount of producers they’ve got on it.
“All Tan Everything (Feat. Jay Z)” which doesn’t really feature Jay Z in person, kicks things off. Das Racist have this strange style of rapping, what I can only really describe as “no effort”, it literally seems like they are rapping of the top of their heads. The shit they are talking about sometimes, it would certainly seem so, with references to Google, and Kool Aid, these guys know what they are talking about as well.
It’s rare you get hip hop thats actually funny, and good. Its hard to take any music with humour seriously. Das Racist’s humor, if anything keep the music real, more real than all these other rappers talking about “packing heat”.
The track that kills it, has to be “hahahaha, jk?” which is I would put down as one of my favourite tracks this year, its wit, its beat and their rapping style, all come together and make this sick sick track. The chorus alone “we’re not joking, just joking, we are joking, just joking, we’re not joking”, will be in your head for the rest of the day. Its really hard not to quote a whole track of Das Racist, thats how good their lyrics are, but with shit like “we’re not racist, we love white people, four trucks, apple pies, bald eagles”, I can’t really resist. Their lazy rap style, of which you could even compare with the giant that is DOOM, even then, its hard to say that. Their style is one that is so unique, they don’t have to worry about people biting on it, it would be too hard to replicate.
A lot of hip hop that focus’s on intelligence, is usually back by a soul, motown beat, maybe some horns. But Das Racist have this weird combination of… everything? You’ll hear a bass low pitch sample like “mother fucker I’m ill”, with a guitar that sounds like its something out of Hawaii.
Even with all these different styles of beats, Das Racists still hold tight, you would listen to each track and know that this is a Das Racist track, not an El-P, or Boi-1da track. I mean sure, the beat is, but Das Racist make it there own. Which is why I am so hyped on this mixtape.
Best of all its 20 tracks long, not one dips in quality, keeping the bar high… oh yeah did I forget to mention it’s free? Yeah its free.

And here is a remix the 8 bit kings, Anamanaguchi, did for them.
