MIND BLOWN: Bee Gees – Stayin’ Alive (Kon’s Re-Edit)

Wow. Whoa. Fuck. Damn. This is intense. The Bee Gees are incredible, don’t lie, because you know you love this song. If you don’t like it, well, you’re pretty much soul-less. Gilles Peterson faced off against Zane Lowe in the latter’s long-running Radio 1 Versus series, playing a Re-Edit of this disco classic by Kon. It doesn’t stray too far from the original’s vision, but rather exemplifies certain elements, pushing them further than usual. It makes something familiar yet new, an instant classic. I really need to get a Bee Gees best of or retrospective or something of theirs to listen to right now. I mean right now.

I’ve got to say it, Peterson owned Zane Lowe on this particular versus, opening with Mark Pritchard’s “Out In The Streets”, a sample of Damian Marley, he was always on top, even if Lowe picked a J Dilla song, Zoo Kid’s sick “Out Getting Ribs” as well as the brilliant Jai Paul’s “BTSTU”. Peterson’s choice of Koreless and Stones Throw’s The Step Kids made him, for me, a clear winner. Decide for yourself – listen to the whole show here.
